NH Arabian Horse Association Newsletter
Message from the President
March 2009

As the days grow longer and the temps begin to warm, we all feel rejuvenated.  It has been a long, cold, snowy winter.  Hard to believe that show season is just around the corner.  Especially when I look at the furry beasts that do not remotely resemble show horses in my barn.  Those of you lucky enough to board or own an indoor facility have a huge advantage!

As most of you know, our horse show this year is the Summer Jubilee Open Horse Show on Aug. 6 – 8th (Thursday through Saturday) at Deerfield Fairgrounds, Deerfield, NH.  It is affiliated with N.H. Horse & Trail and New England Horsemen’s Council.  The club’s Board reluctantly agreed to hold an open show as opposed to a breed show.  We just didn’t get the entries last year to warrant another breed show, and had a sizable financial loss.  Since the show is our major fundraiser, we need to make money.  We are requesting that you please do a sponsorship at whatever level you feel comfortable with.  We understand the financial difficulties that some are enduring right now.  Those of you who are unable to financially support the show; perhaps you could volunteer in some capacity.  Hopefully, with some success our goal is to return to an all Arabian horse show in the near future.

Included on the website is the time schedule for our Show.  We have included some classes that none of the other open shows offer - English Show Hack, Sport Horse Under Saddle and a Dressage Schooling Show.  Those of you that have previously shown at an Arabian show will need no introduction to these classes.  We have included the class specs in the prize list for the newcomers.   Also being offered are open Novice horse and/or rider classes.  This is a great opportunity to get those new riders and young horses into the ring.

We’d also like to point out just how many organizations, committees, shows, etc. where members of your Board of Directors represent you, the members of NHAHA.  Listed here are the representatives, the organizations, shows, committees, etc. and where to reach that member if you have an issue you would like them to address.

Not many local clubs have such wide, diversified representation for their members at so many levels.

BOD member, Sue Levesque, represented the club in Concord in February at the Legislative hearing for bill HBO427 EQUINE LICENSE AND RABIES.  Sue reported, ” HBO 427 proposal was ITL'd (inexpedient to legislate).  It should be gone for about 2 years before maybe coming up again.  Lots of horse people came, some spoke, but the most impressive was Cliff McGinnis, our former state vet, and a representative from NHAQHA, very eloquent, and made all the points needed to impart info.  I was impressed with all the other organizations sending a rep to this meeting, such as AQHA, NHAQHA, NH Farm Bureau, State Vets, etc.”  We will have to be vigilant on this issue because it will come back again.

Just a reminder of our Beach Ride on Sunday, April 19th.  Check in at 10:00 a.m. and ride out is at 11:00 a.m. at Hampton Beach State Park, Hampton, NH.  NHAHA member fee is $20 and non-member $25 which includes BBQ lunch.  Please contact ride coordinator Laura Susmann at or phone 603-876-4446 for more information.

Happy Spring!

Lurline Combs, President
